Sparrowhawk

I was walking down Fermor Road in Tarleton when I came across a Sparrowhawk sat in the middle of the road. I saw a couple walking towards it so I got my camera out and tried to get as close to it as possible. When I waved at the people to come over to have a look it just sat there with its eyes half shut. Only when one of us spoke did it take off without any sign of damage to its feathers or wings.
Does anyone no why this happened (I'm not complaining as I got a great photo) but it was vunerable to cars and I have seen a Sparrowhawk sat in the road around the same spot before.
